FabLab Safety Training Explained
The Instructional Shops is a creative forum for you to work cooperatively with staff and other students to realize your project and develop responsible working practices. The Shops are here to provide a safe and friendly learning environment, and an opportunity to work with manufacturing equipment and machinery.
Expectations for Students
All tool use, including hand tools, requires permission to use from a Fablab Employee. All tool use is supervised by a Fablab Employee, regardless of the training students have completed.

So, how do I get trained?
Woodshop Safety Training Flow Chart
Woodshop Safety training is a combination of online CANVAS modules and quizzes, in-person training and proficiency project completions. If faculty, students or staff would like to get trained in the woodshop, they need to follow these steps:
Complete FabLab Tourientation. This will get you entered into the FabNet system and get you an ID Badge for keeping track of training sign-offs and logging in and out of our space.
Email fablab@ncssm.edu to request to be added to the FabLab Safety Training Course on CANVAS.
Complete the CANVAS General Shop Safety Module and take the Quiz.
Once you pass the Quiz, Level X training modules will become available to you in CANVAS.
Complete each Tool Training Module 1 through n and its respective quiz. Some modules will ask you to take notes and submit them in place of a quiz.
Request in-person Tool Training for each tool in Level X by completing the Book Your Level X In-person Training module. Each page within the module will provide you a password and a link to our booking page.
After each completion of an in-person Tool Training, your ID Badge will be signed by a Fablab Employee. Once all the in-person Tool Trainings for Level X have been signed off, ask FabLab staff for approval to start your Level X Comprehensive Project.
After approval of your Level X Proficiency project, you will be able to complete a Level X Proficiency Quiz on CANVAS and proceed to the next level of training modules.
This process repeats back to step 5, but for Level X + 1.
Expectations for Faculty and Staff
- All tool use requires permission from a Fablab Employee.
- All tool use above Level 1 requires a Buddy, which can be Fablab Employee or another trained adult.
- Following FabLab rules is important, even if you have different rules you follow at home.
- It's important for Faculty and Staff to be good role models and consistent when enforcing our rules.
- Keys to the FabLab are not granted to Faculty or Staff other than to the Peter T. Haughton FabLab Employee hired by NCSSM. This rule is consistent with UNC BeAM policies.
- Access to the FabLab outside of its walk-in hours must be approved by the FabLab Manager and posted to the FabLab Google Calendar 24hrs in advance.
